When National Accreditation Board For Testing And Calibration Laboratories (NABL) issued a notification on consecutive days on May 18 and May 19, first for test reports and calibration certificates and then for Medical lab reports to carry QR codes, it shouldn’t have come as a surprise to those who have been following the document security space.

With the proliferation of laboratories and the liberal use of the franchise model to expand the operations of regional and national chains, the need to verify the authenticity of a lab report has increased. We frequently hear about cases where the collected sample is not sent for actual testing but and instead a false report is generated and money collected from unsuspecting customers. This has serious implications as it can result in improper diagnosis, inadequate or expensive insurance and is a reputation risk for the genuine laboratories. It is however very simple to tackle this problem by making sure that all genuine reports are system - generated centrally and can be validated by anyone in a simple manner to verify the authenticity and even the contents. Qryptal can help to capture the data on the patient’s report in the form of a QR code before it gets printed either physically or electronically. In addition, the QR code will also have the digital signature of the issuing laboratory so that an imposter or rogue franchise cannot create a fake or tampered copy. This can be then validated by the customer or their doctor or even the insurance company and the verified contents can be used for diagnosis, prescription and/or insurance.

Tampered and fake test reports are a global predicament. The problem of fake reports has been seen from Cyprus to Bangladesh, and governments are struggling to integrate document security into test and lab reports.
