Untold secret of using Secure QR code for inventory tagging

QR Codes were first developed to modernise large inventory management systems. It is not unusual to see QR codes in inventory management. QR codes can hold more information than regular barcodes. Today, they are used across many logistics and warehousing systems for managing large product volumes, as an easy way to manage, maintain and track inventory effectively and efficiently.

QR code is an essential tool for inventory management and in manufacturing. QR Codes,

  1. are simple, low cost, unlike RFID or smart tags

  2. capture and hold more information, including serial number, part number, lots and dates, and other data

  3. can store more information than a conventional horizontal barcode

  4. are easy to read with mobile phones and don’t require the bulky hand-held scanners

One nifty enhancement can amplify the above benefits by 100x

Current QR code led inventory systems usually carry static information. Its contents or data once tagged or printed, does not change. And this impacts the entire inventory management system. At each stage, as product transforms, a new QR code tag may be needed to depict the current status.

A use case in spectacle manufacturing

  1. Imagine the use-case of a spectacle frame that transforms a simple frame to a complete spectacle with prescription lenses or coloured lenses before it gets delivered to the customer.

  2. Over time, the power may change, and one of the lenses may break needing a replacement. Once again, the details would change even if the frame is the same.

  3. However, in all cases, it is one unit that has transformed, and the contents need to be updated accordingly.

How can you change information that is already printed on an inventory QR code? Here’s how…

  1. Secure Information is embedded into a QR code in stage 1, and this contains the inventory before undergoing any transformation. The same is printed on the inventory tag on the product. The verifier scans the QR code and gets the specific information that is intended to be read by the recipient.

updation of information at different stages using Secure QR

  1. The status or content of the information has since changed, to work-in-progress components as value addition continues to happen on the base frame during the production or manufacturing stage.

  2. In the final stage, the finished item will continue to maintain the same QR code with updated information along with audit trails on the transformation of the product at each stage.

All such new information and transformations on the product are updated at the back end into the same QR code that is already issued and is printed. When the verifier at each point scans the QR code, they observe the changed status and get the updated information that is intended to be read by the recipient.
